High On The Grain was founded when 4 friends, put on 4 different (well 3 until later on) thinking caps while traipsing around Ann Siang Hill drawing stares at their strange looking cameras. Many rolls have past, cameras have been acquired, borders have been crossed and many a guest have enjoyed our brand of shenanigans.

The inspiration has not ended, we may have found our individual styles and favorites, but everytime we get together for a shoot, it’s like that first day; discovering that happy place all over again.

High On The Grain: An anthology

Lomowall Singapore is calling you for submissions!

So I will most likely be visiting gramps place in Indonesia and hopefully will be sharing some pictures from the kampung.

There are two unfinished rolls in the cameras now, so definitely more pictures to be shared soon.

Mid-day Mayhem!

And serious sunburns. Waiting to see more pictures from the rest of the Lomotion folks who came to the event. It was absolutely fun and just great to meet so many of them.

Stay tuned for updates on the winner for this year’s 36 frames project.

AN INTRODUCTION TO FILM PHOTOGRAPHY PART 1: WHY FILM?

AN INTRODUCTION TO FILM PHOTOGRAPHY PART 1: WHY FILM?:
Written by @luc_sohow, Part 1 of An Introduction To Film Photography

AN INTRODUCTION TO FILM PHOTOGRAPHY PART 2: FILM FORMATS

AN INTRODUCTION TO FILM PHOTOGRAPHY PART 2: FILM FORMATS:
Written by @luc_sohow, part 2 of An Introduction To Film Photography

AN INTRODUCTION TO FILM PHOTOGRAPHY PART 3: FILM VARIETY

AN INTRODUCTION TO FILM PHOTOGRAPHY PART 3: FILM VARIETY:
Written by @luc_sohow, part 3 of An Introduction To Film Photography

Hello it’s been a while since the HOTG tumblr has been updated. It’s really exciting, and we’re keen on producing some interesting stuff for this.

However, work responsibilities might cause a bit of a sticky situation. Hoping for the best for now!

On a happier note, 1/2 of HOTG will be going out with a bunch of LOMOTION folks on a walkabout this Saturday. We have around 18 people (not confirmed yet) going so far~! Some DSLR users, some lomographers, some SLR slingers and some RFiends - this is gonna be great!

Will be posting up some pictures from the walkabout. So to leap from n00b to hanging out with the boys, @luc_sohow & myself went on a walkabout in Joo Chiat with some RF-ers from ClubSnap forums.

Of course there were beautiful Rangefinders and even the most desirable medium format darlings. Awe points aside, I shot through half a roll of Ektar 100 on the Yashica Electro 35 GSN. The pictures turned out okay, I’m still not that used to the focussing but since it IS a rangefinder, I didn’t need to be as precise as I usually am with my SLR.

Which I guess is one of the good points of using an RF. In fact, there were a couple of ‘street’ shots which I took, not looking through the viewfinder but quite simply ‘framing the shot in my head’ and just hang the Yashica on my side and shot away.

I cropped this shot though, you can find the original here.

Having said that the RF does have its good points, I am still very much attached and somewhat dependent on shooting on my SLR. Maybe I’ll change my mind after shooting a Leica? Haha.

xoxo

The month of February was a good one for Chinese all over the world since it was the Chinese New Year. Celebrations here in Singapore seemed a little quieter to me this year but someone decided to set up an old school fairground as part of the celebrations that we call the River Hongbao.

Inspired by the many other fairground pictures available online, I set out to make my own!

Shot with Velvia Slide with a Seagull 4. I think it was exposed for 2 mins at f22. I really should write this down.

The Seagull mounted on a tripod certainly drew a lot of stares. Only one guy recognised it for what it really was and dragged his very shy girlfriend/wife to look into the viewfinder. Literally. DRAGGED her over.

A curious malay guy thought it was a video camera. “So you are recording this now?”

“Well, it’s film, I’m taking a single shot now.”

“Wah”

The shot above is kinda overexposed, so I tried to fix it. Results shown below.

This just brings images of Terminator 2 to my mind. I don’t really know why. It just does.

Finally, the type of shot that inspired me to do this in the first place. Edited for contrast and brightness.

every picture has a story to tell. (by @arienvalo)

Taken with Nikon FE2, Fuji Astia 100

“Even though we’re not related, but I call her ‘Ah Ma’ and have been doing so for the past 5 years or so. She sells random items on the streets of Orchard Road for some spending money. She lives alone, with no immediate family. She spends the rest of her time at the temple near where she lives. And her arthritis is so bad that her fingers cannot be stretched out straight anymore. But Ah Ma always looks very happy when I bump into her and always thank me for the little bit of money I pass her whenever I can. She remembers that I was doing my undergraduate program and asks of my family’s health and well-being.”

No one would have been able to guess the story behind this picture, if I hadn’t written it down. The smiling old lady might have been another face in the crowd or she could’ve been somebody else’s grandmother, living a life of comfort and not passing her days peddling her wares.

Whenever someone asks me what is it about photography that intrigues me, I always reply that it’s about capturing the moment or taking a picture that tells a story. It’s always about translating how you feel about something, someone, somewhere or sometime into a single frame.

If you ask me how do I take good pictures, I will reply that it’s about knowing your camera, it’s about the moment, it’s about luck, but most importantly, it’s about you making that picture an imprint of your memory. It could be a message you want to convey or just a raw emotion, there are no limitations to what this single frame can do.

I worry about taking good pictures sometimes, and not because I think that I’m a brilliant photographer, but rather, it’s the fear of becoming so technically apt that my pictures become sterile. That is why, I’m putting away my SLRs for the time being and going back to shooting on the LC-A+ and to bring my Gakken Flex out for a stroll. So that I don’t have to worry about setting my apertures correctly, using the right lens or metering, but to just enjoy the surprises that await.

Sometimes a great picture is simply how it makes you feel and how you feel for it.
